Astro Bot Review: At Last, A Nintendo-tier Platformer On Playstation

Players can also use both gloves to pull on enemies to unmask them, whip them around, or even grapple onto certain surfaces marked by red. The Monkey cannot punch forward with as much force but it can still slap. It can hit the ground for a seismic wave too and climb certain sections using motion controls and the triggers again.

What Are All Special Bots In Astro Bot? Helldiver 1 – Super Earth Ambassador

It’s ceaselessly cute and clever, and feels more like a little kid delighted to show you their toy collection than a braggart displaying their trophies. The only ability that doesn’t work as cleanly as others is the one used in an underwater level. Meant to mimic a dolphin-like dive ability, the controls used for this one never feel as intuitive as those for other abilities. In this level, I found it unusually tricky, albeit not exactly difficult, to collect all the secrets. A few of them demanded a deft diving ability the backpack is meant to offer, but it doesn’t have the same accuracy of other abilities in the game, which led me to whiff on some sections in a way that was unique to this level. It was manageable, but if any secret levels–which tend to be some of the game’s hardest–also use this mechanic, I expect them to become some of the game’s few frustrations.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33’s Popularity Has Fans Finally Recognizing The Best Final Fantasy

Astro Bot’s utterly overflowing creativity and ingenuity make it one of the first platformers that feels like it can stand outside the long shadow cast by Mario. It’s a grand celebration of PlayStation’s legacy and a sign of what its future can become. What’s amazing is despite how wide-reaching the references are in Astro Bot, this isn’t just a celebration of PlayStation’s first-party stuff but so much of what’s defined gaming for decades. Monster Hunter, Space Channel 5, Wipeout, Legend of Dragoon, Tony Hawk, the list goes on and on. Obviously, there’s NK88 can feature everything from across four decades of gaming, but I consistently found myself amazed by the rich variety of references and games featured.

I wasn’t sure I was going to fire up Kayak this season (with the sales that just dropped, I’m picking up about four new PSVR2 titles, so I’m not sure I’d have thought to play this one again). This game is in my stocking ($33 US from Costco last month), so I probably won’t get to play that level this year. If you’re looking for something to play over the holidays, even if you already cleared it last year, we can’t recommend it enough. It’s a refreshing change of pace that means you end up spending much more time here than in the more straightforward levels. However, Winter Wonder doesn’t just stand out for its immaculate festive vibes.

Then, in 2024, players were treated to the full-length critically acclaimed platformer Astro Bot. When the PlayStation 5 mothership is attacked by ASTRO’s long-standing galactic nemesis, scrambling its wires and scattering the crew throughout space, only ASTRO can make things right! As galaxies are explored and Bots are rescued, Astro Bot’s hub world stations begin to unlock, including a closet with outfits for Astro and a claw machine that gives players a place to spend all their collected coins.

Find out about Astro’s origins and learn how to draw your favorite bot from the playful hands of team Asobi artists. ASTRO BOT is developed by Team ASOBI, part of PlayStation Studios. Previous games include The Playroom, ASTRO BOT Rescue Mission and ASTRO’s Playroom. In Let it Slide, you will slip, slide and skate your way across a frozen sea avoiding the perilous icy waters below.

Astro Bot’s Next Adventure May Be Stuck Between A Rock And A Hard Place

Astro Bot took what players loved about those tech demos and expanded upon them immensely into a fantastic platforming experience. In this game, players once again have to save Astro’s crew across multiple galaxies. Along with that, they also have to repair their PS5 mothership and experience the history of PlayStation through collectibles, unique levels, fun little robots, and so much more. And now that it has gone on to become one of the best-selling PS5 games, there are likely plenty more adventures on the way.

At the same time, Astro is searching for the missing parts of the PS5 spaceship, which are being guarded by bosses in each galaxy. This is a grand re-opening for Astro Bot, and it surely marks the start of what is destined to be a beloved series shooting for the moon. My favorite aspect of the game is how it seems to read my mind.

And while you don’t need a long history with Sony systems to enjoy it, it is especially a delight for those with a piece of PlayStation in their heart as a treasure trove full of playable nostalgia awaits. Over 150 of them in fact, as characters from PlayStation’s vast library of games have made their way into Astro’s world in the form of other bots. There are the ones you’d expect like Lombaxes, tomb raiders, and a certain rapping dog but, delightfully, some are plucked from the more obscure end of the scale. It’s light touches of irony and slapstick humour like this that keep Astro’s playful tone going throughout. It really is just a delight from start to finish in this regard. Octo-Balloon is another power-up that is flight-based although the functionality is quite different.
